Frost free hose bibs getting ruined every year because hoses were not removed is a big and expensive problem . I got these self draining vac breakers to see if they would actually work to prevent damaged hose bibs . They do seem to drain the hydrant IF THE VALVE IS SHUT OFF AND THE HOSE NOZZEL IS OPENED LONG ENOUGH TO ALLOW THE WATER TO DRAIN Out .Apparently the hose will not need to be removed to prevent the hose bib from being damaged in freezing weather . [ Whether or not one needs to remove the hose itself to above freezing location to protect it is another matter .] However there is a sticker on these self draining breakers that says to keep them from freezing . So I will have to try to test that this winter .
Hi Richard!
Thank you for all of your thorough feedback, we enjoy reading it and gaining insight from all of our customers. The self draining vacuum breakers you purchased are in fact frost resistant. Unfortunately, none of our vacuum breakers are 100% frost proof, however so long as you are not in an area where you are experiencing drastic temperatures below zero for long periods of time this should work just fine for you. With that being said, you will not need to remove the hose in order for these to drain properly and resist freezing. You can absolutely leave the hose connected without running the risk of your hose bibb being ruined. It is imperative that the hose bibb is fully turned off prior to the first freeze and after ever use during cold months should you use it. It is also recommended that you remove any remaining pressure in the hose by using any sort of hose nozzle and holding the 'trigger' down until nothing else comes out of it. We do recommend that the hose is wrapped up and off the ground to prevent it from freezing due to any liquids remaining in the line, however if this is not done it should not effect your vacuum breaker or your hose bibb. I hope this helps put your mind at ease, but if you have any additional questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to us. We look forward to talking with you next spring to see how these worked out for you! Have a great week!
